Phil Mickelson's no longer the finest golfer never to have won a major. He's now the finest to have won no more than two, the pundits were saying after his victory at the PGA Championship at Baltusrol in August had elevated him to No 3 in the World. Prior to that he had won the 2004 Masters, but in a year of great inconsistency, the 2005 US Open, which he had come desperately close to winning on three previous occasions, turned out to be something of a disaster - he finished 33rd - and if that wasn't bad enough, he then went on to finish in a red-faced 60th place at the 135th Open Championship at St Andrews. Then, seemingly out of it, he shrugged all the bad karma away, picked himself up and marched to victory at Baltusrol. This in the same season that he had already won the FBR Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on a back-to-back basis in February and the BellSouth Classic in April. He remains World No 3, but he didn't close the season especially well, though. finishing 29th at the WGC-American Express Championship, missing the cut in the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas and inexplicably withdrawing from the highly lucrative season-closing Tour Championship. Finished 2005 in third place on the US Money list with prize-money of just over $5m
