PROFILE

Retief Goosen now comes firmly under the category of event specialist after claiming a 2nd US Open title at Shinnecock Hills 12 months ago. His unflappable approach on the final day saw him hold off a strong Phil Mickelson challenge on a course that brought many of the best players in the world to their knees, including his playing partner Ernie Els. Goosen's superb ball-striking will always give him a chance on a US Open layout - and seemed to be doing just that when he led by by three shots heading into the final day at Pinehurst this year. Then, inexplicably, one of the game's coolest golfers derailed in the final round and dropped 11 shots to finish 11th. He has hit back since, winning his first US PGA Tour event this year at The International and finishing 5th and 6th respectively in the 135th Open and the US PGA Championships, but he allowed Michel Campbell, winner of the US Open, to march past him again at the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth when he was looking unstoppable and although he has overtaken fellow South Africa Ernie Els at No 4 in the world, he has admitted that his game has been "very up and down" this year. We saw that at the season-closing Tour Championship where once again his game fell apart in the final round after he had been a serious contender.
